English Learner Development Program

Department Philosophies

Language Arts Department: At Vista Magnet all of our EL (1-R) students are placed in mainstream classes with supports in place. During scheduling our EL (1-R) students are registered to teachers who have SDAIE and SIOP training. All teachers at Vista Magnet receive ongoing training/coaching from the ELD Teacher, including SIOP strategies, use of sentence frames, implementation of language frames, and practice with using CELDT writing rubrics to score student work and discuss the progression of language development. This position also allowed for Language Arts teachers to participate in two Instructional Rounds facilitated by the ELD Teacher/Coach. In addition, the ELD Teacher/Coach oversees many aspects of our parent outreach including parent nights to teach computer skills, hosting ELAC meetings, coordinating reclassification informational meetings/celebrations, and making regular phone calls home. The ELD Teacher/Coaching position is necessary in addressing the achievement gap between the English Only students and the EL (1-R) students (See table 1).

Math Department: As a magnet school fully embracing STEAM, our goal at Vista Magnet is to have all of our 8th grade students take Algebra 1 or Honors Geo/Trig. In contrast to all the other school in VUSD, Vista Magnet does not offer an Algebra Readiness class. This means that 100% of our 8th grade EL population is taking the most rigorous coursework offered at other VUSD sites (see table 2). In addition to teaching the Math SEI classes, the Math Teacher/Coach works closely with the Math Department to begin the transition toward Common Core and continues to work with teachers on shifting the cognitive load to the students. This includes weekly meetings with the department, building consensus around restructuring the use of instructional time, modeling lessons, developing curriculum, facilitating 4 Instructional Rounds, and frequently analyzing student data with the department. The position of Math ELD Teacher/Coach is crucial in addressing the achievement gap of our English Only students compared to our EL (1-R) students (See table 3).

Reclassification of students

Next year EL (1-R) students represent 36% of the student population. Our state and federal challenge in 2012-2013 is to keep up the pace of closing the achievement gap with our EL’s.
